Last Samurai, The (2003)

IMDB rating: 7.80

Plot: In the 1870s, Captain Nathan Algren, a cynical veteran of the American Civil war who will work for anyone, is hired by Americans who want lucrative contracts with the Emperor of Japan to train the peasant conscripts for the first standing imperial army in modern warfare using firearms. The imperial Omura cabinet’s first priority is to repress a rebellion of traditionalist Samurai -hereditary warriors- who remain devoted to the sacred dynasty but reject the Westernizing policy and even refuse firearms. Yet when his ill-prepared superior force sets out too soon, their panic allows the sword-wielding samurai to crush them. Badly wounded Algren’s courageous stand makes the samurai leader Katsumoto spare his life; once nursed to health he learns to know and respect the old Japanese way, and participates as advisor in Katsumoto’s failed attempt to save the Bushido tradition, but Omura gets repressive laws enacted- he must now choose to honor his loyalty to one of the embittered sides when the conflict returns to the battlefield…

ARGGG. Trilogy about ninjas?
Ok so going out on a limb but: about 5 years ago i read what i remember to be a trilogy of fiction books. it might have been two books and i’m 98% sure it wasn’t just one book. the plot was something like a boy who became a ninja. this all took place in japan. of course there was a love story too, something i remember was the scene where they met, i think she was training with kendo or something like that, and when their eyes met it was true love or whatever. the boy infiltrates some castle or something at the climax of the book. if i’m not being influenced by the last samurai, i also believe towards the end there was an army being amassed by some important guy that were using guns and western weaponry. tried looking it up but no luck so far.

Help me identify these famous books.?
So, I used to play a game based on A Series of Unfortunate Events by Lemony Snicket. In that game, there were many books, which, for the most part were a reference to a book in real life. Here’s a list:

"Chimbley Sweep"
"Up the Down Way"
"The Wind in the Bellows"
"Kid on a Hot Thin Roof"
"The Grapple Speed Record"
"Street Detective"
"The Basic Nine"
"Reptile Hopscotch"
"The Persnickety Platform"
"The Voyage Outside"
"Fudging the Future"
"Tree-Hopping for Dunces"
"A Vital Fireman’s Diary"

Like Kid on a Hot Thin Roof is Cat on a Hot Tin Roof, or The Wind in the Bellows is The Wind in the Meadows. Of coarse, not everything might be a book, but any identification will be much appreciated.
